Meet Linda Gower; Environmental Health Practitioner for The Burden Group

The Burden Group Ltd is committed to maintaining the highest standards of Health and Safety across its businesses and to this end employs a qualified Environmental Health Practitioner, Linda Gower. Linda’s primary role is to ensure that both James Burden Limited & Cavendish Ships Stores Limited comply with Food Safety and Health and Safety legislation.

Prior to joining the Group Linda gained extensive experience as an Environmental Health Practitioner for local authorities, where her duties included Food Safety management, Health and Safety enforcement and Port Health work in Dover and Portsmouth.

Linda enjoys a very busy role across the organisation, based at the Fareham depot of Cavendish Ships Stores. In addition to her workload for Cavendish Ships Stores, Linda regularly travels to London to monitor compliance statutory and Company policies. In-house audits are conducted every six weeks in each of our 5 shops on Smithfield Market where food safety, food labelling and Health and Safety are examined. As a result of this regular monitoring by Linda, together with the overall high standards maintained within the shops, James Burden Limited is audited by the Food Standards Agency just once every 12 months – the minimum required by legislation.

As well as ensuring both companies are in compliance with legislation, Linda works to raise standards above the legal minimum. Traceability is continually being enhanced and currently we are improving our data capture at goods inwards to meet the requirements of our British Retail Consortium Issue 7 certified customers. This improved traceability system will benefit all our customers as well as the enforcement agencies when they conduct their routine audits.

An essential element of ensuring that the highest standards of Health and Safety are maintained is regular staff training. Linda ensures that the teams in both companies are kept abreast of the latest developments through a mix of in-house and external training courses.

As a valued member of our team Linda ensures that the very highest standards of food safety are maintained, giving customers’ confidence that our products will always reach them in the best possible condition. Despite the onerous nature of her job Linda always has a cheerful disposition; her laughter is often heard from afar.
